Zander & Partner staged Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019
Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria – also known as “The City of Seven Hills” – was chosen alongside the Italian city of Matera as the European Capital of Culture for 2019. This great honor has been awarded annually by the European Union since 1985, and since 2004, at least two cities per year. The aim is to use the corresponding funding to highlight the cultural and historical aspects of a city or region and make them accessible to visitors. The title of “Capital of Culture” is awarded for one year, during which numerous cultural events take place.
In time for Europe Day 2019, the Zander & Partner team was invited to be part of the diverse cultural program with their flagship FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS on May 9th and 10th, and to create an evening highlight.
It was both an honor and a great challenge to stage the beautiful and unique city with light art installations, projections, and a spectacular 3D video mapping. The artistic contributions were related to various themes and impressively highlighted not only content and cultural aspects – related to Europe, Bulgaria, and Plovdiv – but also the wonderful architecture of the historic city.
Thus, the venerable center of the city shone in a very special glow, giving the familiar facades a completely new appearance. Visitors to Plovdiv wandered through a luminous gallery under the starry sky.
