Hamburg Speicherstadt – 10 Years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District with Chilehaus being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the 140th anniversary of HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG), the historic Speicherstadt became part of the Festival of Lights tour.

As part of the “Long Night of World Heritage,” the Festival of Lights team—together with HHLA and Hamburg’s Ministry of Culture and Media—presented a spectacular light projection on the façade of Speicherblock P, shown over three evenings from 18 to 20 September 2025.

The installation invited the audience on a visual journey through time: beginning with the construction of the Speicherstadt, highlighting its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and honoring the contemporary significance of the Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus District in a global context—standing shoulder to shoulder with world-famous landmarks such as the Taj Mahal or the Great Wall of China.

Impact & Significance

The Long Night of World Heritage offered a unique blend of listed architecture, vibrant urban history, and contemporary light art. Through the interplay of historic ensembles and modern artistic staging, Hamburg’s World Heritage was presented as a living cultural and experiential space—sending a strong message about the city’s identity as a hub of maritime trade, commerce, and culture.
